Breast implant rupture: Detecting defects in the implant at an early stage using ultrasound

Arzt führt Implantatcheck mit Ultraschall durch

We do a lot for a longer and healthier life and care about our health. For this reason, regular check-ups are carried out for the early detection of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases. Although breast implants are foreign bodies in our human body, they are often forgotten during check-up examinations.

Causes and symptoms of a breast implant rupture

The breast implants used today can remain safely in the body for years to decades. However, they are subjected to heavy loads, so there is a small risk of an implant tearing.

Since the body forms a protective shell (capsule) around the implant in the first few weeks, the silicone cannot spread throughout the body. However, irritation occurs and, in the course of time, thickening of the capsule. This, in turn, can lead to pain or a change in the shape of the breast.

In order to detect a rupture or other defects in the breast implant at an early stage, we recommend an ultrasound examination. In the next step, the defective implant can then be replaced. Most breast implant manufacturers offer warranty programs should a new operation become necessary.

When does an ultrasound examination of breast implants make sense?

A check of the breast implants is recommended if you feel a change in the breast. This can be hardening, changes in shape, swelling or new breast pain. Even if you are happy with your implants and have no symptoms, we recommend a check-up 5 years after their insertion and every 2-3 years thereafter.

How does the implant inspection work?

The key is the collection of certain information about your breast implants. If you have an implant passport, we ask you to bring it with you to the examination. After that, your breast will first be clinically examined and then an ultrasound will be performed. The results will be discussed directly on site. The entire consultation lasts 30-45 minutes.

Does the implant check replace breast cancer screening at the gynaecologist?

No. This examination focuses solely on the breast implants – the mammary gland tissue is not examined. Therefore, you should still attend the annual gynaecological check-ups and carry out breast cancer screenings according to the recommendations of your gynaecologist.

How much does the examination cost?

Our normal rate for an initial consultation applies. Patients who have undergone breast surgery at the clinic utoquai are offered a free check-up of the implants as part of the follow-up check-ups.
