Sculptra® is a biostimulator made of poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates the tissue to produce the body’s own collagen. When applied to the buttocks, the treatment can smooth out minor unevenness, subtly contour the area, and provide a mild lifting effect. Depending on their severity, indentations on the sides where the hips meet the buttocks—known as hip dips—can also be treated.
In everyday language, the treatment is often referred to as a buttock filler or non-surgical buttock augmentation. Unlike a hyaluronic acid filler, however, Sculptra® does not produce an immediately visible volumizing effect. The change develops gradually as a result of stimulated collagen production. For a more pronounced enlargement or change in shape, buttock augmentation using autologous fat or buttock implants is usually a better option.
At clinic utoquai, PD Dr. med. Matthias Waldner, a board-certified specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (FMH), tailors each treatment to the individual. Since we offer a variety of buttock contouring methods, we openly discuss during your consultation which treatment best suits your body and your goals.
Sculptra® allows for gentle buttock contouring without the need for surgery or fat removal. This method is particularly suitable for patients who desire a subtle change with minimal downtime.
Sculptra® for the buttocks is suitable for patients who want a minor correction to the contour of their buttocks and wish to resume their daily activities quickly after treatment. Patients must be in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding the possible results.
This treatment may be particularly appropriate if:
Sculptra® is not suitable for significant augmentation and cannot tighten severely sagging skin. In these cases, buttock augmentation using the patient’s own fat, implants, or a buttock lift may be more appropriate.
Treatment will not be performed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, in cases of inflammation in the treatment area, or if you are allergic to any of the product’s ingredients. We will discuss any pre-existing medical conditions and a tendency to develop raised scars during the consultation.
Sculptra® consists of microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid, a biodegradable material that is also used in other medical products. Before treatment, the product is prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions and then injected into the target tissue.
Once there, Sculptra® stimulates the body’s own collagen production. The fullness visible immediately after the injection is initially due in part to the injected fluid and possible swelling, and it subsides over the following days. The actual effect develops gradually as collagen is produced.
At clinic utoquai, we use only Sculptra® for the buttocks. We do not use hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®) on the buttocks. Our team’s experience with autologous fat transfers and other buttock contouring methods helps us tailor a personalized treatment plan to identify the specific areas where a change in volume can effectively enhance the contour. For more information about the active ingredient, please visit our Sculptra® page.
A hyaluronic acid filler adds volume to the treated tissue itself and therefore produces an immediate effect. However, large amounts would be needed for the buttocks. This would make the treatment very time-consuming and expensive. That is why we do not use hyaluronic acid on the buttocks at clinic utoquai. Sculptra® stimulates the tissue to produce its own collagen over the course of several weeks, which is why the results develop gradually.
Calcium hydroxylapatite, known by the brand name Radiesse®, is also a biostimulator. The product adds some volume and then stimulates collagen production. At clinic utoquai, we primarily use Radiesse® on the face. For the buttocks, we use Sculptra® because poly-L-lactic acid can be evenly distributed over larger areas.
In buttock augmentation with autologous fat—also known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)—fat is harvested from another area of the body and injected into the buttocks. This method is suitable when a substantial change is desired and there is sufficient fat tissue available. In combination with liposuction, the shape can be sculpted like a work of art: tissue is removed in some areas and added in others.
For patients with little fatty tissue who want significantly more volume, implants may be an option. This requires surgery under general anesthesia. Sculptra®, on the other hand, is suitable for subtle changes without surgery.
During a personal consultation, we assess the shape, proportions, and skin quality of your buttocks, hips, and waist. We’ll determine whether Sculptra® can help you achieve your goal or if another method would be a better fit. You’ll receive a clear assessment of the results that can realistically be achieved. We’ll also discuss the procedure, alternatives, risks, aftercare, and costs. It’s helpful if you write down your questions in advance and bring information about any pre-existing medical conditions, medications, and previous treatments on your buttocks.
Blood-thinning medications increase the risk of bruising. We will discuss during your consultation whether you should stop taking them before treatment and, if so, for how long. Please do not stop taking any medications prescribed by your doctor on your own. You should avoid alcohol and nicotine as much as possible in the days leading up to treatment. On the day of treatment, the treatment area will be examined, marked, and disinfected. Sculptra® will be prepared for injection according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Whether local anesthesia is appropriate will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Sculptra® is injected through several small puncture sites into the predetermined areas and distributed evenly. The treatment focuses in particular on those areas where minor irregularities need to be smoothed out or where the contours need to be subtly sculpted. The amount of product required and the number of sessions depend on the initial condition, the treatment area, and the desired result.
After the treatment, massage the treated area five times a day for five minutes each time for five days. This ensures that the product is evenly distributed throughout the tissue. You may sit immediately after the treatment. You may resume exercise, sauna use, and swimming after two days. You will receive further instructions after the treatment; any follow-up appointments will be scheduled on an individual basis.
Sculptra® is generally well tolerated, but like any injectable treatment, it can cause side effects. The individual risk depends, among other things, on tissue characteristics, pre-existing medical conditions, and adherence to post-treatment care.
Possible risks include:
Careful application of the product and massage following treatment reduce the risk of nodules. PD Dr. med. Matthias Waldner’s expertise as a specialist and the personalized treatment plan help minimize risks.
At clinic utoquai, the cost of Sculptra® for the buttocks starts at 1,300 CHF per session. The cost depends on the amount of the product used and the number of sessions. For the buttocks, 4–8 vials are usually needed per session. A full treatment typically costs between 2,600 and 5,200 CHF. You will receive a personalized cost estimate before treatment. Since this is a cosmetic procedure, health insurance does not cover the costs.
What is Sculptra® for the buttocks?
Sculptra® is an injectable treatment containing poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates the production of the body’s own collagen in the subcutaneous tissue. When used on the buttocks, the treatment can smooth out minor unevenness, subtly contour the area, and provide a mild lifting effect.
Can you get buttock injections?
Sculptra® makes it possible to treat the buttocks without surgery. However, unlike a conventional hyaluronic acid filler, it does not add immediate volume. The change develops gradually as collagen production is stimulated. For a significant increase in volume, autologous fat or implants are usually more suitable.
Can Sculptra® correct hip dips?
Yes, Sculptra® may be suitable for correcting minor indentations on the sides of the hips. Hip dips are primarily caused by the shape of the pelvis and the distribution of muscles and fatty tissue. Sculptra® gradually builds collagen in these areas, which can make the transition from the waist to the buttocks appear smoother. For pronounced indentations, treatment with autologous fat generally achieves a greater change.
How much buttock enhancement is possible without surgery?
Sculptra® is primarily expected to produce a subtle change. Over time, the buttocks may appear slightly fuller, firmer, or more contoured. Significant augmentation generally cannot be achieved with this treatment. Autologous fat or buttock implants are more suitable for that purpose.
Is Sculptra® a buttock filler?
Sculptra® is often referred to as a buttock filler, but it works differently from a hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid immediately adds volume to the tissue, whereas Sculptra® stimulates the production of the body’s own collagen. The result therefore develops over several months.
When will I start to see results from Sculptra® treatment on my buttocks, and how long do they last?
The first changes become visible after approximately 4–6 weeks, with the final result appearing after around 3–6 months. The fullness visible immediately after the injection is caused by fluid and subsides after a few days. The result generally lasts for up to 24 months. A maintenance treatment is possible.
How many sessions and how much Sculptra® are needed for the buttocks?
Usually, 2–4 sessions at intervals of 4–6 weeks are recommended. Significantly more Sculptra® is required for the buttocks than for the face, with approximately 4–8 vials typically used per session. The amount you need depends on the treatment area and your goals and will be determined during the consultation.
Is the Sculptra® treatment for the buttocks painful?
The injections can be felt, but most patients consider the treatment to be well tolerated. If desired, a numbing cream or local anesthetic can be used. The area may be tender for a few days afterward.
When can I sit, work, and exercise again after Sculptra® treatment on my buttocks?
You may sit immediately after the treatment. You can generally return to work on the same day. Exercise, sauna use, and swimming are possible again after two days. During the first five days, it is important to massage the area five times a day for five minutes each time.
Does Sculptra® help reduce cellulite on the buttocks?
Sculptra® can smooth out minor unevenness and dimples in the contour of the buttocks. However, it is not a targeted cellulite treatment. During the examination, we will assess whether your skin changes may respond to Sculptra®.
Is Sculptra® an alternative to a Brazilian Butt Lift?
For minor corrections, Sculptra® can be a non-surgical alternative to buttock augmentation using autologous fat. If a more significant change in volume or shape is desired and sufficient body fat is available, a Brazilian Butt Lift generally offers more extensive possibilities. The appropriate method depends on your anatomy and treatment goals.
What should I look for when choosing a doctor for Sculptra® injections in the buttocks?
It is important to choose a board-certified specialist, ideally in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, who has experience with body treatments. A good consultation should also explain alternatives such as autologous fat or implants and openly tell you if Sculptra® cannot achieve your goal. You should also ask about the product being used, the planned amount per session, aftercare, and who will be available if you have questions following the treatment. At clinic utoquai, PD Dr. med. Matthias Waldner, a board-certified specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (FMH), tailors each treatment to the individual.
How safe is non-surgical buttock augmentation compared to implants?
Sculptra® treatment for the buttocks does not require anesthesia or incisions. Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, and tenderness; palpable nodules occur less frequently. Implants involve the additional risks associated with surgery, such as wound-healing problems, infections, or displacement of the implant, and the recovery period is significantly longer. However, implants can achieve a much greater increase in volume. We will discuss which method may be suitable for you during the consultation.
Which looks more natural: Sculptra®, hyaluronic acid fillers, or autologous fat?
Sculptra® and autologous fat can both produce natural-looking results when the method is appropriate for the patient’s starting point. Sculptra® is suitable for subtle changes that develop gradually and are barely noticeable to others. Autologous fat is the patient’s own tissue and can also achieve more significant changes. We do not use hyaluronic acid on the buttocks. How natural the result looks depends primarily on whether the proportions of the waist, hips, and buttocks are balanced.
How do I prepare for a consultation about non-surgical buttock augmentation?
Before your consultation, consider what you would like to change about your buttocks and how noticeable you want the change to be. Pictures of results you like can help you explain your expectations. Bring information about any pre-existing medical conditions, medications you take regularly, and previous treatments. During the consultation, we will examine your buttocks, hips, and waist, discuss suitable methods, and prepare a cost estimate.
How discreet is a Sculptra® treatment for the buttocks?
Your case is subject to medical confidentiality. Since no surgery is required and you can sit and return to work immediately afterward, the treatment is hardly noticeable in everyday life. Because the result develops over several months, the change also appears subtle to those around you.
