What is FUE hair transplantation?

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. It is a modern form of hair transplantation designed to help our patients achieve more hair volume or simply optimise their hairline. In this minimally invasive procedure, we remove individual hair follicles (grafts) from the donor area and transplant them into the areas of the head to be treated. This method does not leave any visible scars and the recovery is quick.

Who can benefit from FUE hair transplantation?

The FUE method is suitable for people who suffer from thinning hair or a high forehead and are looking for a permanent solution without having to accept the risks of a surgical procedure. We use hair transplants for patients with thinning hair and bald patches on the head. This method is also promising for receding hairlines. Sufficient hair density in the donor area is important. FUE hair transplantation is also suitable for short hairstyles since the treatment method involves minimal scarring.

The procedure: What you can expect before, during and after the treatment

Each of our treatments begins with a detailed consultation. We will do our best to determine the cause of your hair loss in order to select the most suitable treatment for you. We will discuss your individual wishes and needs and determine together whether the FUE method is the best treatment option for you. We explain the procedure and potential risks to you in detail. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to ask all your questions about the treatment. Of course, we also provide you with all the necessary information about expected costs.

Preparation for the hair transplant

We recommend that you stop taking any blood-thinning medication around 2 weeks before the treatment. It is also advisable to stop smoking in advance. You should refrain from using hair styling products on the day of your treatment.

The treatment process

FUE hair transplantation is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic. Depending on the number of grafts to be transplanted, it takes between three and eight hours. The treatment is performed in several stages:

Harvesting the grafts

The donor hair is shaved to a length of 1.5 mm in advance. In some cases, shaving can be omitted (No-Shave-FUE). In this case, only the hair intended for removal is shortened. We will determine your individual options during a detailed consultation. The grafts are usually removed from the back of the head. The hair follicles are detached from the hair fringe and extracted from the scalp using a fine hollow needle.

The FUE method is subject to constant innovation. We expect even more modern techniques to be used in the coming years. One example involves robot-assisted extraction of grafts using the ARTAS® method.

Preparation

The harvested grafts are carefully examined under a microscope. They must be specially prepared for transplantation.

Hair transplantation and check-up

In the next step, we insert the hair into the desired areas of the scalp. We use the innovative sapphire hair transplantation technique, which has established itself as one of the most advanced methods of hair restoration. Delicate sapphire blades are used so that the hair follicles can be inserted without causing trauma. This precision makes the procedure particularly gentle on the tissue and contributes to faster healing. Once the transplant is complete, we check the treatment area to ensure that all hair follicles have been properly transplanted.

After the hair transplant

During a final consultation, we answer any questions you may have and inform you about the correct aftercare. You can then leave our clinic. Even though there is no prolonged recovery time at home, you should avoid strenuous activities and exercising for the next three weeks. You can wash your hair for the first time four days after the treatment. Protect your scalp by wearing sun protection, especially in summer.

You will have regular check-ups to keep an eye on the success of the treatment. The implanted hair will fall out between the 4th and 12th week. This is a normal part of the process. The first new hairs usually grow back after about six months. You will be able to see the permanent end result after about twelve months.

Frequently asked questions and answers about FUE hair transplantation

What are the advantages of FUE hair transplantation?

The FUE method produces natural, aesthetic results without visible scars. It is also suitable for short hairstyles.

Is FUE hair transplantation possible without shaving?

While the manual FUE method requires the donor area to be shaved in order to reach the hair roots, the no-shave method offers a treatment option without shaving. Only the hair intended for removal is shortened.

What are the risks of FUE hair transplantation?

The FUE method is considered a low-risk method. Minor bleeding or numbness is extremely rare.

What other methods are there for harvesting grafts?

In the conventional form of hair transplantation (Follicular Unit Transplantation, or FUT for short), a strip of skin is removed from the donor area. This results in the formation of a linear scar, which is often associated with severe pain.
